I’m finally tired of feeling like a slug. Any ideas for how a single parent can get some exercise, other than active play with her kid (which I already do)? j

  1. It’s all I can do to keep up with Juliette when she rides her bike around town. I put on my running shoes and powerwalk to keep up, will be jogging before too long. And, while I’ve never really been big on exercise classes and videos, I do like this balance ball DVD I have, in part because it does rattle the floors but you still get a decent workout.

  2. I do the “Tuesday Night Races” here (they’re only in the fall), but I carry Daniel through the “Munchkin League”- which he’ll be big enough to walk on his own next year. Lots of people w/ strollers and kids of all ages. If there’s not something like that near you or if that doesn’t appeal, maybe you can walk with another parent and a kid close to Selam’s age who can run around with her while you walk. Exercising is one of the hardest things to make time for, but it pays dividends in terms of feeling better and in setting a good example. My determination is so high because I don’t want D to think all we do is sit around (my tendency)!

  3. I’m having the same problem. I’ve basically gotten no exercise since I adopted Bereket two years ago (and I use to figure skate 2-3 times a week and go to the fitness center at work early in the morning). One thing I am going to do is take a dance class. Fortunately the dance studio where Bereket is taking ballet is starting an adult class at the same time as her class. So instead of just sitting there waiting for her, I’ll be dancing myself (I haven’t done any dancing since I was a kid). Is there any classes that your daughter is taking that you can leave during that time and do something else? I don’t know what your work schedule is like, but can you do anything during lunch hour?
