This morning we were both very sleepy. We got last minute free tickets to see Mary Poppins and it was wonderful.  It also meant being out very late on a school night.  I let Selam sleep in as late as possible, so as to minimize the damage, but she still wasn’t ready to wake up. This is one of only a handful of times that I’ve had to wake her up. She normally wakes up first.

“It’s time to get up.”

“No it isn’t.”

“Yes, sweetie, we have to go to school in just a half hour, so out of bed, clothes, shoes, breakfast!”

“It isn’t morning.”

“Yes it is. I know, we were out late, but you slept late and now it’s time to go.”

“It isn’t.”

“It’s new year’s today, so there is no school.”

“No, that was Monday, Jewish new year. Today is school.”

“It’s Chinese New Year.”

“That’s in February.”

“It’s Ethiopia New Year.”

“That was last week.”

“Every day is a new year if you want it to be, so it’s new year’s today.”

“This is the New Year of going to school.”

“I don’t like this game anymore.”
